Possible Lines of Enquiry for Estates and IT in a Scientific Research Council

Objective
In October 2008 Spirals was commissioned as subject matter experts to give an external view on Estate services and IT within a large and prestigious scientific research council.  The research council has a number of sites across the UK together with two sites abroad.

Engagement
Spirals work was part of a larger transformation programme aimed at developing a ‘blueprint’ for a newly formed organisation.  Spirals brief was to help the thinking around infrastructure support and to suggest possible lines of enquiry.  To carry out this work in a cost effective manner the Spirals’ team used its experience and knowledge of ‘good practice’ within both Estates and ICT.

Result
Spirals developed seven possible lines of enquiry.  Due to confidentiality and possible sensitivities it would not be appropriate to detail these in this case study.  Many of these are however, considered innovative.     Alongside this work Spirals developed deliverables and a cost effective methodology for the next stage.
The proposed methodology used the lines of enquiry to encourage greater collaboration across the research council’s sites and individual departments.  The methodology also recognised the possible sensitivities and was designed to achieve high levels of buy-in.
The client says that the work has been useful and is currently considering the next steps.
